Signing a Document written in a language unknown to the signer or Consular Officer
In a case where the document is written in a language unknown to the signer or the consular representative (Hebrew or English), the document should be translated before arriving at the consulate. There are two ways to translate the document:
Translation by an attorney in Israel proficient in both languages:
The attorney must be a notary public.
The document must be translated identically to the original document.
The attorney must attach a declaration of translator on their behalf, containing all of their details.
Translation of the document by a translator proficient in both languages:
Each document must be translated and attached together, separately from other documents. It will not be possible to receive a compilation of translations containing different documents.
The document must be translated identically to the original document.
The translation or the original document must be in Hebrew or English.
It is possible to choose a translator from the list of translators here.
Upon completing the translation process, you need to visit the US Department of State to obtain an apostille stamp on the translation.
Verification of Public Documents
Verification by means of an "Apostille” stamp. In 1978, Israel joined the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents - 1961 (hereinafter: the Hague Convention). The purpose of this Convention was to shorten the processes required for a particular country to recognize the official documents issued by another country, by means of “Apostille” certification. Public documents and certificates that were issued in one of the countries, that are signatories to the above Convention, must bear the “Apostille” stamp to be valid for presentation in Israel.

In a real estate transaction – the identification will be made solely by means of a valid passport or ID card.
Documents that are in a language not known to the representative or to the signatory:
If the language of the document is not known to the representative or to the signatory, a translation in a language that is understood by the signatory or by the representative must be attached together with a certified affidavit of the translator.
The translator's affidavit must state that the translator is proficient in both languages and that the translation is true to the original.
A translator's affidavit can be certified in one of the following ways:
- By the authorized diplomatic representative, as a separate notarial act
- By a local notary. The affidavit must be duly certified (apostille or authentication by the local foreign ministry).
- By an Israeli lawyer or notary.
Verification of signature on behalf of a corporation or company incorporated in Israel – the following documents should be attached:
- Certificate of incorporation or certificate of registration of the company, duly certified (apostille or authentication by the local foreign ministry).
