Amit Mekel currently serves as the Israeli Ambassador to Paraguay and previously held the position of Deputy Chief of Mission at the Consulate General of Israel in the Pacific Southwest, a role he assumed in August 2021. As Deputy Chief of Mission, he occupied the second-highest position representing the State of Israel in the Southwest region of the United States and was the first non- Jewish diplomat to serve in this capacity. His prior roles include Deputy Director of the European International Division at Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, Advisor for the Middle East Peace Process in Brussels, Deputy Consul General in São Paulo, Brazil, and Spokesperson for Israel’s Embassy in Cairo.


Amit is a full Ph.D. student at the Peter F. Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. He holds a master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Security from Tel Aviv
University and a bachelor’s degree in Diplomacy and Strategy with a focus on the Middle East from the Reichman University in Herzliya.


In recent years, Amit has led the Los Angeles International Initiative of Health Diplomacy, collaborating with top physicians and researcher s worldwide. His dedication to humanitarian causes and human rights has earned him the highest accolade from the Foreign Affairs Office in Jerusalem and an honorary doctorate from the Latin American University.


Born in the Druze village of Dalyiat El Carmel in northern Israel, Amit served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces. He is fluent in four languages.
Amit finished his debut book, "My Journey to the Israeli Identity,". The book explores his personal journey as a Druze connecting with Judaism through his Israeli identity and examines the experiences of minority communities, including those in the U.S.
