The Legacy of Fiddler on the Roof Continues

Through the iconic portrayal by Chaim Topol in Norman Jewison's 1971 film ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, the character of Tevye the Dairyman entered many of our hearts.

Topol first came to play the lead role during a run of the eponymous stage musical in 1966 in Israel, replacing the production's lead cast Shmuel Rodensky when he fell ill. He went on to perform the role in 1967 for the production at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, before being offered the part in the 1971 Hollywood film - a role which landed him the ‘Best Actor’ award at the 1972 Golden Globe Awards

Tevye comes back to life this month at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, this time spectacularly portrayed by Adam Dannheisser. The stage musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, directed by Jordan Fein, returns to London after a hugely successful West End run in 2019. The cast features Israeli-British actress Noa Bodner as Rifka and granddaughter of Chaim Topol, Darya Topol Margalith, as Schprintze.

The musical, created by trio Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock, and Sheldon Harnick in 1964, tells the adapted Yiddish story of ‘Tevye and His Daughters’, one of the collected tales by Sholem Aleichem.

Performances take place at 19:45 between 27 July and 21 September.
