Organized by the Embassy of the State of Israel in Croatia, a ceremony was held last night in the Jewish Community of Zagreb to award the Righteous Among the Nations medal to the late Ljudevit Vrančić, a brave native of Ludbreg, who risked his life during the Holocaust to save Theodora (Dora) Basch (married Klayman) and Zdravko Basch. His name will be engraved on the memorial wall in Yad Vashem in Jerusalem along with the names of the other 136 recognized Croatian Righteous.
Last night, the audience had the honor of seeing and hearing Ms. Klayman who arrived from the USA where she has lived since she was young.
Ambassador Gary Koren emphasized that this ceremony is unusual because Yad Vashem decided to present the award to the survivor herself, since Vrančić adopted her after the war. ''I am extremely glad that you could join us today, traveling all the way from the USA. No one but you knows how you survived, how you lost your parents, and most of all what Ljudevit Vrančić was like. I am sure that your family, children and grandchildren know and deeply cherish the memory of him, his courage and his noble spirit", said the ambassador.
"Two millennia ago in Jerusalem, the Jewish sage Hillel coined a sentence that signifies the noble act of the Righteous. This sentence engraved in the medal and written in the honorary recognition of Yad Vashem, which I now hand over to you, says: "He who saves one soul is like saving the whole world," said Ambassador Gary Koren.
