Opening of the synagogue centre in Potsdam: a historic moment for the Jewish community in Brandenburg

After years of planning, the Jewish community centre and synagogue opened its doors in the heart of Brandenburg's capital. The new centre impresses with its architecture, which skilfully combines modernity and tradition. The effective design by architect Jost Haberland combines Brandenburg clinker brick and light-coloured oak furniture in the prayer room.

Yesterday, Thursday (4 July), an important chapter in the history of the Jewish community in Brandenburg was opened in Potsdam. The grand opening of the new synagogue centre created a place that not only offers space for religious ceremonies, but is also a symbol of cohesion and cultural diversity. The ZWST played a central role in the planning and realisation of the project. It supported the communities not only financially, but also organisationally and logistically. With its extensive experience in the social and cultural sector, the ZWST helped to develop a concept that meets the diverse needs of the Jewish community.

The opening ceremony was characterised by joy and pride. Representatives of the Jewish community, local politicians and numerous guests took part in the celebrations. Federal President Steinmeier was also present and emphasised the symbolic importance of this new centre for the city of Potsdam and the Jewish community in Germany. Foreign Minister Baerbock and Brandenburg's Minister President Woidke also attended the event. This shows how important it is to the German government to secure the Jewish future in Germany.
Ambassador Ron Prosor said at the inauguration: "This prestigious building in the centre of Brandenburg's state capital is an opportunity for non-Jews to experience Jewish culture and the values of which we are very proud."

Four Jewish communities - the Jewish community of the city of Potsdam, the synagogue community of Ud Joffe, as well as the two smaller communities "Adass Israel" and "Kehilat Israel" - will use the centre for religious, social and cultural purposes. This utilisation concept is unique.

The opening of the synagogue centre in Potsdam is much more than the inauguration of a building. It is a strong symbol of diversity, tolerance and the peaceful coexistence of religions and cultures in our society. May this centre be a place of encounter and exchange for many people and contribute to the enrichment of urban life.
