Agricultural Extension: Systems, Methods & Tools

June 24th – July 5th, 2024

MASHAV - Agricultural Extension Systems

Background
Extension has long been grounded in the diffusion model of agricultural development, in which technologies are passed from research scientists via extensionists to farmers (FAO).
To farmers, extension is a form of assistance to help improve their know-how, efficiency, productivity, profitability, and to promote the wellbeing of their family, community, and society. To politicians, planners, and policy makers in many developing countries extension is a policy instrument to increase agricultural production, to achieve national food security, and, at the same time, to help alleviate rural poverty. To field extension agents, agricultural extension enhances and accelerates the transfer of useful know-how and technologies to rural people. All these objectives may be achieved through nonformal education and training programs and two-way technology transfer and feedback systems. Agricultural extension has become recognized as a mechanism for delivering information and advice as an essential “input” into modern farming

The advancement of the Israeli agricultural sector depends, largely, on a unique model known as the 'holy triangle’, which includes three partners: farmers, agricultural extension and researchers.
In this model cooperation takes place between the partners with the aim of learning from each other, contributing to each other, and finding solutions to problems directly related to Israeli agriculture, efficiently, quickly and without arguing. The key to the success of this model rests on a continuous and direct transfer of information taking place in all directions; between learned and motivated farmers and the agricultural training personnel; and among researchers in agricultural research who carry out the
experiments conducted in their field of expertise together with the farmers and/or the agricultural extension agents. All partners participate in the creation and dissemination of new knowledge.
