To mark International Women’s Day 2022, the Embassy of Israel, together with Thammasat University, organized an open discussion on ‘Global Gender Equality Challenges’ for students and staff at Rangsit Campus. The students had a chance to hear the stories of three prominent women from different backgrounds.
The Ambassador of Israel, Her Excellency Ms. Orna Sagiv, shared her personal stories as a female diplomat, as well as the effort made by the Israeli government to promote gender equality and women empowerment. Miss Universe Thailand 2021, Ms. Anchilee Scott-Kemmis, known for her #RealSizeBeauty Campaign, spoke about how women were not defined by physical appearances nor the so-called beauty standard. Ms. Nitcharee Pen-eakchanasak (Khun Than), also known as ‘Soa Noi Kid Buak’, recalled past incident in which she lost both of her legs in Singapore, and how she did not allow her disability to rob her from the life she wanted to live.
The Ambassador and Assoc. Prof. Gasinee Witoonchart, Rector of Thammasat University, also discusses possible cooperation to further advance gender equality.
Later that day, the Ambassador, Ms. Anchilee and a delegation from the Embassy of Israel visited the Women and Family Development Learning Center in Nonthaburi province. The women at the center demonstrated various skills they attained at the Center, such as tailoring, baking, Thai massage and more. To show appreciation of the wonderful work done at the Center, the Embassy of Israel donated boxes of everyday necessities, mainly feminine hygiene products, to the Center.
Since its establishment, Israel has made tremendous efforts towards gender equality and women’s empowerment. Today, Israeli women are prevalent in every aspect of leadership including politics, business, laws, science and technology and more. Ms. Orna Sagiv is the second Israeli female Ambassador to Thailand, and promoting women empowerment is one of the top priorities.
“Coming from Israel where several sectors are driven by women, it is my duty to communicate with younger generations and show them that being a woman does not limit her abilities. Thanks to our special guests, Khun Anchilee and Khun Thun, my message is even stronger today,” said the Ambassador
