Ambassador Roey Gilad, on Tuesday (6 May 2025) led celebrations in Accra to mark the 77th Independence Anniversary of the State of Israel, reaffirming the enduring partnership between Israel and Ghana.

Addressing diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and members of the Israeli and Ghanaian communities, Ambassador Gilad described the event as a moment to reflect on Israel’s journey as a nation and its longstanding ties with Ghana.

“It is a deep honor to stand before you tonight,” he began, recalling the historic relationship that began in 1956 when Israel opened an office in Accra—a year before Ghana gained independence. In 1957, that office became the first Israeli Embassy on the African continent.

Though diplomatic ties were interrupted in 1973 following decisions by the Organization of African Unity after the Yom Kippur War, they were fully restored in 2011. “Since then, a small but efficient Israeli team has worked diligently to promote and strengthen bilateral relations,” Ambassador Gilad said.

Despite challenges—ranging from the geographical distance between the two countries and recent economic hardships in Ghana, to the ongoing war in Israel—the Ambassador emphasized that mutual respect and cooperation have remained strong.

He shared an anecdote underscoring Israel’s popularity in Ghana: “A senior Ghanaian cabinet member once told me, ‘Second to the Ghanaian flag, the Israeli flag is the most popular one in the Makola Market.’” He also recounted seeing Israeli flags on fishing boats along the Gulf of Guinea and Volta River, which fishermen believe bring them good luck.

While highlighting areas like agriculture, high-tech, cybersecurity, and defense, Ambassador Gilad also spotlighted lesser-known areas of collaboration:

Sports: Ghanaian footballers continue to thrive in Israeli leagues, and Ghana’s under-15 team recently won a tournament in Israel. He expressed hopes of eventually welcoming the Black Stars to Israel.

Cultural Exchange: Israeli performers, including a leading jazz trio - Yogev Shetrit Trio, recently held masterclasses at the University of Ghana. Plans are underway to host an Israeli playwright for similar engagements.

Academic Cooperation: A Ghanaian university is set to host an Israeli professor for a special seminar on “Current Israel” due to overwhelming demand.

However, the celebration also bore a solemn tone as the Ambassador reflected on the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led massacre, which claimed nearly 1,200 Israeli lives. He paid tribute to two victims connected to the Israeli-Ghanaian community: Sergeant Amir Fisher and Captain Guy Nizri. Nizri’s father, Mike, attended the event.

Ambassador Gilad noted that 58 hostages are still held in Gaza after 580 days. “Until their release,” he said, “our wounds remain open.” He reiterated Israel’s position that peace can only be achieved if Hamas releases the hostages, lays down arms, and exits Gaza—echoing support from several Arab leaders and segments of the Palestinian population.

“Though the conflict is over 100 years old and currently at a low point, I strongly believe in the possibility of a peaceful solution that ensures stability and prosperity for both peoples,” he stated.

Also speaking at the event was Ghana’s Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, who represented the Government of Ghana.

“It is a great honor to join you in celebrating the National Day of the State of Israel,” Mr. Adjei said. He extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the Ghanaian government and lauded Israel’s innovation, resilience, and global contributions.

Mr. Adjei emphasized that Ghana and Israel share a longstanding relationship rooted in friendship, mutual respect, and a shared vision for progress. He acknowledged Israel’s support in vital sectors such as agriculture, health, cybersecurity, and technology.

“As a friend of Israel, Ghana remains committed to the values of peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding,” the Minister affirmed.

The event concluded with a performance by the Israeli jazz trio - Yogev Shetrit Trio and a toast to continued peace and prosperity for both nations.
