Notice of change of marital status (marriage/divorce)

This service enables Israelis to update their marital status following marriage or divorce.
Required Documents To Apply
Passports of both spouses must be presented.
Marriage/divorce certificate - If the certificate was issued abroad, it must be authenticated as required (with an apostille stamp in countries where this exists).
Required presence at the Consulate
If both spouses are Israeli citizens, they must both be present.

If one of the spouses is a foreigner, only the spouse holding Israeli citizenship is required to be present.
Please note
1. If your partner is is a citizen of the country you got married in but was not born there, or if they are not a citizen of the country you got married in, they must attend the meeting too. They must present an original, legalised document (either Apostile or the equivalent in countries who aren't party to the Apostile Treaty), that shows they were single prior to marrying you. If such a document does not exist in their home country/the country where they were born, they must sign a notarized statement at the consulate for 12 GBP, stating they were single prior to marrying you. For example, if you were married in the UK to an American national, or to a British national who was born in the USA, your partner must present an American legalised document showing they were single in the USA before marrying you, or pay and sign the statement at the consulate.

2. We can only accept civil marrige or divorce certificates (we cannot update personal status with documents from a Beth Din or other religious court).

3. If the document is not in English or Hebrew, it must be translated and the translation must be legalised with an Apostile stamp, as well as the original apostilled document.

4. Any public document presented must be stamped with an Apostile stamp.
Please note
Marriage certificates given in the UK are issued at local councils or district offices. The marriage certificate must be apostilled by the FCDO, google get your document legalised and apply for a paper based apostille.

For registering divorce, please provide an apostilled copy of your final and absolute decree from the family court.

If your marriage or divorce certificate is not from the UK, please email consular11@london.mfa.gov.il for instructions.

How to apply

You must submit the application in person at an Israeli mission in the country where you are staying.

  • The forms and documents required by the mission must first be sent by email, for a preliminary examination prior to your arrival at the mission.

  • When one spouse is an Israeli citizen and the other is a foreign citizen, a certified apostille certificate (from the country of origin) indicating the previous personal situation of the foreign spouse must also be presented.
  •  In countries where it is not possible to obtain a public certificate attesting to a previous personal situation and/or any other document:
  • A notarized statement of the foreign citizen on his previous personal situation must be prepared, signed before the consul (or before a notary). In addition, a certificate from the consul must be attached stating that in the country/province it is not possible to obtain an official certificate indicating a previous personal situation.
  • A marriage certificate in which a previous personal situation is recorded meets the requirement, when it is verified.
  •  It is also possible to present a marriage certificate issued in Israel, in which the previous personal status of the foreigner is recorded

Please note

In case of marriage, the passports of both spouses must be presented.

If the certificate was issued abroad, it must be authenticated as required (with an apostille stamp in countries where this exists).

Setting an appointment
If both partners are Israeli, both must appear at the consulate (doesn't have to be at the same time, but ideally at close intervals).
If registering a marriage to a foreigner, they need to report to the consulate with you if they were not born in the same country as where they were married, or if the country they were born in does not provide a marriage certificate that shows that they were single prior to marrying you.
