Bilateral relations

75 years of broad and deep relations

Diplomatic relations between both countries date back almost to the moment Israel proclaimed its independence, on May 1948.

On February 1949 Chile recognized the State of Israel. On May 16, 1950, the first Israeli representative to Chile, Minister Plenipotentiary Jacobo Tzur, presented his credentials to President Gabriel González Videla. Tzur initially established his residence in Argentina. Subsequently, Samuel Goren, honorary advisor, took charge of the Israeli mission in Chile.

Since then, bilateral relations have significantly strengthened, and have remained at the ambassadorial level ever since.

During these 75 years of relations, milestones of great importance have been achieved, such as the visit to Chile of Prime Minister Golda Meir and of then Chancellor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimón Peres. On 2010, Sebastián Píñera became the first President of Chile to make an official visit to Israel.

Increasingly, both countries maintain a rich political, cultural and commercial relationship. Israeli companies in Chile are especially active in Chile's national satellite program, as well as in the fields of agriculture, desalinization, and defense, among others.
