Today, at the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria, a photo-documentary exhibition dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Bulgarian politician Dimitar Peshev was presented. The exhibition, titled “Righteous Among the Nations: Dimitar Peshev,” was prepared by Associate Professor Angel Dzhonev from the Institute of Historical Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
Through 14 panels, the author of the exhibition, Associate Professor Angel Dzhonev, narrates the life and deeds of the Deputy Chairman of the 25th National Assembly, who played a significant role in saving Bulgarian Jews during World War II, using photographs and documents.
In his speech to the guests, Ambassador Yossi Levi Sfari referenced the words of Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski in the Statute of the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee, where he envisioned that in the structure of the future Bulgarian state, Bulgarians, Turks, and Jews would be equal in every respect.
Ambassador Sfari emphasized that today, there is a need for more people like Dimitar Peshev. “Dimitar Peshev did not remain silent in the face of evil. As Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly, he used his voice. Tragedies happen not because of the bad actions of a minority, but because of the majority of good people who remain silent in the face of evil. In times when we see the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, the USA, and many other parts of the world, we need strong voices. It is they who will be remembered, not those who spread hateful posts, messages, letters, or jokes based on prejudice.”
The event was attended by members of parliament, the leadership of the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria "Shalom" and other Jewish organizations, as well as representatives of Bulgarian institutions and the academic sector.
