A Ceremony to mark the restoration project of The Chinchpokli Cemetery In Mumbai

The Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai, and Mr. Solomon Sopher, Chairman & Managing Director of Jacob Sassoon Trust concluded a ceremony to mark the restoration project of The Chinchpokli Cemetery on 3rd July 2024 at 11:00 am. The project undertaken included beautification & restoration of the cemetery of the European Jews who rest there.

Consul General of Israel to Midwest India Mr. Kobbi Shoshani’s remarks began by narrating how the holocaust impacted several Jews all around the world but found a safe haven in India not once but twice. Mr. Shoshani reflected upon the horrible events of the Holocaust during the Second World War where Jews faced persecution during the Nazi Regime. (1939-1945).
He said, “India has always reflected its strong tolerant democratic fabric by demonstrating inclusiveness in their Indian Society, so much so that the Jews who rest here were warmly accepted.”
Speaking on the occasion, The German Consul Ms. Clara Duske said that this unique ceremony marked the cooperation of all three countries- India, Israel & Germany in preserving the heritage of European Jews who were able to live their lives without fear of persecution in India.

The event was also addressed by Mr. Solomon Sopher who said that restoring the gravesites was of utmost importance as it testified to the solidarity of the Jewish Communities of India.

Ms. Jinx Ackerkar, a Holocaust Survivor herself narrated her experience to the heads and members of the Jewish Community present in the audience. The event was concluded after a brief Media Interaction and a visit to the renovated area.
