About the programme: The Master’s Program Israel: History and Geopolitics is directed towards students in the fields of Humanities and Social sciences interested in the history and geopolitics of Israel and the region. The program examines issues of diplomacy and the politics of conflict resolution in a historical context, with an emphasis on relations between the Israel and the neighboring countries in the 20th and 21st centuries. 

The program is headed by Dr. Rumyana Christidi, an associate professor at Sofia University and Head of Jewish Studies. 

Educational objectives: In the first semester, students take compulsory courses related to the history and basic principles of diplomacy and conflict resolution, the history of the relationship between Jews and Arabs during the 20th and 21st centuries, the history and legacy of the Holocaust, and an introduction to contemporary Israeli and regional politics. The second semester is focused on practical classes and the preparation and writing of a Master’s degree thesis. In both semesters, the curriculum is supplemented by elective courses allowing the students to deepen their knowledge in a specific historical period, from Antiquity to the present. Students also have the opportunity to take courses focused on the study of Jewish language and culture, obtaining a basic level in Hebrew.

The students’ competence in English is a prerequisite for the successful completion of the classes, for the acquisition of the required amount of knowledge and for the completion of the on-going evaluation and exams.

Professional Qualifications: Students in the Master’s Program Israel: History and Geopolitics acquire in-depth knowledge and competencies on the history, politics, and diplomacy of the countries of the region, with an emphasis on the state of Israel. In the course of their studies, they develop the skills to extract information from historical, diplomatic, legal, and religious texts, as well as from contemporary academic literature and to analyze the dynamic processes of interaction between Israel and the states in the region.
